Instructor: Melody Allen, Sumner County Teacher of the Year 2015-16 for Grades 9-12

3 croppedMelody Allen graduated from Portland High School in 1981 and from Western Kentucky University in 1986 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in History and English. She returned to her high school alma mater to teach English and Theatre in 1986 and has continued there since, except to complete a Master of Arts degree program in English in 1995-96. During her first ten years she taught a combination of English and theatre courses. In 1997 she began teaching theater full time and has continued to do so until the present. In her tenure she has directed over 65 full length plays and over 25 one-act plays, writing five of those plays herself. She has continually pursued adding theatre courses that are relevant to the interests of her students—such as set construction, makeup, lighting, etc. Ms. Allen has served as the Fine Arts Department Chair at Portland High School since 2002.
