RECYCLING AT PHS
Portland High School is involved in a variety of recycling programs in an effort to reduce our carbon footprints.
Below you will find a list of the different products we recycle at PHS. You will also see where the money goes, if any is raised from our recycling efforts.
1. TerraCycle (money for technology)
A. Candy Wrapper Brigade-individual candy wrappers, large candy bags, and multi-pack candy bags.
B. Huggies Diaper Brigade-plastic diaper packaging and wipes outer plastic packaging.
C. Tortilla Bag Brigade-Tortilla plastic bags, tostada cello bags, and tortilla plastic packaging.
D. Health and Beauty Brigade-lipstick cases, mascara tubes, eye shadow cases, shampoo bottles, conditioner bottles, bronzer cases, foundation packaging, body wash containers, soap tubes, soap dispensers, lotion dispensers, powder cases, lotion bottles, chapstick tubes, face soap dispensers, face soap tubes, face lotion bottles, face lotion jars, eyeliner cases, eyeliner pencils, eyeshadow tubes, concealer tubes, concealer sticks, lipliner pencils, hand lotion tubes, hair gel tubes, and hair paste jars.
2. Staples (money for flat screen monitors for the computer lab, lcd projectors for school usage)
A. Empty ink jet cartridges
B. Empty toner cartridges
3. Newspapers-Office Paper ("Cans for Christmas")
A. There is a recycling bin located outside the cafeteria door on the track side of the school designated for newspapers and office paper.
4. QRS Recyclers (environmental benefit only)
A. Cardboard, tin, junk mail, magazines, phone books, plastic bottles, and plastic bags.
**Please note that our recycling is a single-stream method. There is no sorting. All recyclables can be placed in the same bin.
**The recycling bin is located on the track side of the school next to the trash container. The recycling bin is green.
5. Volunteer Recycling ("Cans for Christmas")
A. Aluminum cans
**A class began a community project several years ago to assist families in need at PHS. They labeled the project, "Cans for Christmas". All monies raised from the recycling of aluminum cans goes into this fund.
The items from TerraCycle and the empty ink cartridges can be dropped off in the front office. The other items may be placed in the recycling bins.
If you have aluminum cans for the "Cans for Christmas", they may be dropped at school or you can take them to Volunteer Recycling on Morningside Drive and let their office know to credit Portland High School's account with your donation.
