HELPFUL LINKS AND INFORMATION FOR STUDENTS AND PARENTS: ACT Information—All Juniors are given the ACT at school in March. If students want to take the ACT additional times, they have to sign up for a national test date, given at a variety of locations. Please go to the link below for information and to sign up! http://ACT.org PSAT Information—The Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test is given every October, but is not required. College bound sophomores and juniors should consider taking the test to prepare for the SAT, get feedback about critical academic skills, and (for juniors) enter certain scholarship competitions. CEMC SENIOR SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM
CEMC will be awarding for the 2012/2013 school year ten scholarships to graduating high school seniors whose parent(s) or guardian receives electric service from CEMC at their primary place of residence. Pick up an application in guidance or online at cemc.org. Applications are due in guidance by February 25, 2013. ESSAY SCHOLARSHIP FOR GRADUATING SENIORS Templeton Press is sponsoring an essay contest that is open to any high school senior who intends to enroll at an institution of higher learning by fall of 2013. The applicant will write an essay about his/her life’s purpose. The contest carries prizes ranging from $1,000 up to $5,000. The deadline is December 31, 2012. Full entry information can be found at: http://lawsoflifecontest.com/ THE SERTOMA CLUB of NASHVILLE The Sertoma Club of Nashville will award a $3,500 scholarship to the first place winner and 3 second place scholarships in the amount of $2,000 each. Students will write an essay of 300 words or less on a specific topic. The essay will be judged primarily on the BASIS OF CONTENT, and they must be turned into guidance by December 7. COMCAST LEADER AND ACHIEVERS SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM The Comcast Leader and Achievers Scholarship Program recognizes high school seniors from Comcast communities for their commitment to community service and academics (2.8 GPA or better). TSDAR American History Scholarship A $1,000 scholarship granted to a graduating senior who will be attending an accredited college/university and who will have a concentrated study of a minimum of 24 credit hours in American History and American Government. Come to guidance for more information. The deadline for application is November 15. TENNESSEE CONCRETE ASSOCIATION TCA is sponsoring the annual high school essay on Concrete Contest for Tennessee. The contest is open to all high school students ages 16-18. Come to guidance for more information or visit www.tnconcrete.org. Applications must be submitted by December 3, 2012. TENNESSEE MANUFACTURED HOUSING ASSOCIATION The Stan and Thelma Plumlee Scholarship is awarded each year by the Tennessee Manufactured Housing Association. The applicant must live in a manufactured or modular home or have a close relative who works in that industry. This is a four year scholarship with a total value of $8,000, provided the student remains in school. Applications must be recieved by March 8, 2013. Pick up information in guidance.
NIFB YOUNG ENTREPRENEUR AWARD Graduating high school seniors who operate their own small business are eligible to receive a 2013 NFIB Young Entrepreneur Award from the NFIB Young Entrepreneur Foundation. THE PRINCETON PRIZE IN RACE RELATIONS The Princeton Prize in Race Relations recognizes students who are helping improve race relations in their schools or communities. SCHOLARSHIP INFORMATION Now is the time for high school seniors to apply for Tennessee Tech University scholarships for 2013-2014. The scholarship application is available online at www.tntech.edu/scholarships. Students must first apply for admission before applying for scholarships. The deadline to apply for scholarships for 2013-2014 is December 15. The scholarship application is now completely online; paper applications are no longer offered. Letters of recommendation must now be completed online.
Austin Peay Freshman academic scholarships are awarded on a first-come, first-served basis. The admissions application is the application for these scholarships, so apply for admission ASAP at www.apsu.edu/admissions! Also, there are some APSU general scholarships. Go to www.apsu.edu/scholarships for a complete list. To be eligible for these scholarships, you must submit the online scholarship application at www.apsu.edu/scholarships. The deadline to apply for Community College Academic Scholarships is April 1. For other general scholarships, the priority application deadline is February 1. . The Wilder-Naifeh grant, part of lottery money, is available to any Tennessee resident who enrolls in a Tennessee Technology Center. The grant is for up to $2,000/year. Apply to the technology center of choice, file the FAFSA beginning January 1, 2013, and graduate. Get more information in guidance. Application for admission should be made before or at the same time that scholarship applications are sent. Don’t forget to have supporting documentation sent as well. This includes your transcript and ACT scores which must be sent from the high school. TIPS FOR SCHOLARSHIP APPLICATIONS Remember, most are competitive. Be Neat. Type if possible. Follow instructions completely. Meet deadlines. Ask for letters of recommendations in advance. Have someone proofread essays and applications.
